Part 2 of my Storyboarding and Exploration into The Aleph by Jorge Luis Borges.
In this part, I drew the opening paragraph, focusing on the tone/atmosphere and the mental state of the main character.
Board 1: "On the burning February morning Beatriz Viterbo died, ..."
- For the first board, I felt it necessary to depict Beatriz's funeral to set the initial mood for the rest of the scene.
Board 2: "... after braving an agony that never for a single moment gave way to self-pity or fear, ..."
- This board I left simple as to not distract from the focus of the main character's mental instability but I kept it to clarify the gloomy atmosphere.
Board 3: "I noticed that the sidewalk billboards around Constitution Plaza were advertising some new brand or other of American cigarettes."
- Similar to Board 2, I kept it simple as I felt that is a break from the perceived focus, yet, it is important for the next board that talks about how the city is changing and becoming more modern.
Board 4: "The fact pained me, for I realized that the wide and ceaseless universe was already slipping away from her and that this slight change was the first of an endless series. The universe may change but not me, I thought with a certain sad vanity."
- In this, the main focus is the emptiness the character feels, stuck in is never changing mind.
Board 5: "I knew that at times my fruitless devotion had annoyed her; now that she was dead, I could devote myself to her memory, without hope but also without humiliation."
- He now thinks of Beatriz, the woman he loved but continues to think about, in an almost obsessed way. I felt that the main character was not in love with Beatriz in a normal way and felt that he preferred to keep her in his mind, forever being the only thing he thinks about.
Board 6: "I recalled that the thirtieth of April was her birthday; on that day to visit her house on Garay Street..."
- In the final board, the main character states that he now visits Beatriz and her family's home. although he is welcome there I can't help but feel that that this is again his way of keeping his obsession with Beatriz fresh in his mind.
